The Creation of Castle Otttis

Castle Otttis was built by two men, Ottis Sadler and Rusty Ickes, between 1984 and 1988.

They wanted to create something beautiful that looked like it came from a thousand years ago.

Inspired by Irish castles, they built it with their own hands, using split-face concrete blocks, steel rods, and poured concrete.

The castle weighs about 7 million pounds and has 88 window openings with no glass, so the elements can flow through it.

Interestingly, Castle Otttis was never meant to be a home or a business.

Instead, it was designed to be a landscape sculpture, a piece of art that would remind people of an old Christian church.

The builders did all the masonry work themselves, without any paid help.

When they were halfway through, they found out they needed a construction permit.

Due to a mistake, the castle was classified as a garage. But this is no ordinary garage!

Inside the Castle

The interior of Castle Otttis is just as impressive as the outside. Lee Carpenter, a skilled craftsman, took three years to complete all the woodwork inside.

From 1988 to 1991, he built eight beautiful staircases, an altar, a pulpit, and a series of pews.

He used mostly cypress wood and some old southern heart-pine.

The inside of the castle feels like stepping into a grand church from long ago.

There is also a choir loft and a bishop’s chair inside. Every piece of woodwork was carefully crafted to match the medieval style of the castle.

The result is a breathtaking space that feels both historic and artistic. Visitors often feel a sense of peace and awe when they step inside.

A Place of Peace and Inspiration

Castle Otttis is not just a castle; it’s a sanctuary. The builders wanted it to be a place where people could come to find peace and inspiration.

Today, it is still used for spiritual and creative purposes.

The castle hosts a public interdenominational Christian worship service on the last Sunday of each month.

It’s a special place for reflection and connection.

The castle is open to visitors by appointment only. Whether it’s for school trips, wedding ceremonies, or private tours, people can experience the magic of Castle Otttis.

It’s important to note that the castle is not accessible for those with physical handicaps due to the many stairs on the property. For those who can visit, it’s a memorable experience.
